There are now many Regad-style electric creasing tips available on the market, particularly from manufacturers in Asia. Many of these alternatives are perfectly capable of producing a good crease, smoothing an edge or completing normal leather-finishing work. For beginners, occasional users and cost-conscious leatherworkers, they can offer very good value.Genuine Regad tools, however, are manufactured with a different philosophy. Regad manufactures its leather-finishing tools in its workshop in Romans-sur-Isère, France. Its creasing irons are made from steel, precisely machined and carefully hand-polished. For tools such as its border irons, the steel parts are carefully polished before the heating resistance is fitted, and that the brazing is done by hand using brass. The difference becomes most noticeable when consistency, durability and prolonged professional use become more important.Take an FN2-style tip. It isn't simply a piece of metal with a groove cut into it. The radius, depth, guide surface, crease width, polishing and transition between surfaces determine whether it: compresses and rounds the leather nicely, or instead drags, scratches or cuts into it.

No. We have used a number of Chinese-made electric creasing machines and tips ourselves, and many of them are absolutely capable of doing the job.For occasional leatherwork, short projects or someone learning hot creasing for the first time, a good-quality alternative may be all that is required. The difference is less about whether the tool works and more about how consistently it performs when your workload, expectations and variety of leather increase.

From our experience and discussions with manufacturers in China, stainless steel is commonly chosen for some Regad-style tips because it is highly resistant to oxidation. This is particularly useful for mass production and inventory storage. A manufacturer may produce a large quantity of tips and keep them in stock for some time before they are sold. Stainless steel helps the product maintain a clean cosmetic appearance without requiring additional polishing or maintenance before dispatch. For a manufacturer producing large quantities at competitive prices, reducing this additional handling helps keep production and storage costs down.Regad follows a more traditional manufacturing approach in which the finish and working surface of the tool form an important part of the final product.

The material is only one part of the equation. A hot creasing system depends on several factors working together:• the material of the tip• the size and thermal mass of the tool• the heating element• the power supply• temperature regulation• the shape and polish of the working surface• the type of leather being workedDifferent metals transfer, retain and recover heat differently.During a small job, these differences may be difficult to notice. During prolonged use, repeated contact with cool leather continually removes heat from the tool, so heat recovery and temperature stability become increasingly important. This is one area where a professional system can become noticeably more comfortable and predictable to use.

In our experience, genuine Regad equipment becomes particularly valuable during prolonged or demanding leatherwork. We have used several lower-cost electric creasing systems ourselves. They can produce very good results, but during heavier use we have noticed greater variation in temperature and heat recovery. It is important to point out that this is not necessarily caused by the tip alone.Temperature consistency depends on the complete system, including the tip, heating element, transformer/power supply and temperature-control electronics. We have also experienced switches and temperature-control components wearing or becoming less consistent on some lower-cost machines after heavy use.For occasional use this may never become a significant issue. When a machine is being used regularly throughout the day, however, reliability and consistency become much more important.

One important factor is thermal mass.A larger piece of steel can store more heat. When a heated tip comes into contact with cooler leather, some of that heat is immediately transferred into the material. A tip with greater thermal mass tends to lose a smaller proportion of its stored heat during each contact, helping it maintain a more stable working temperature.A smaller, lighter tip may heat up quickly, which can be convenient, but repeated contact with leather can have a greater effect on its temperature. For occasional leatherwork, this difference may hardly be noticeable. If you are making one wallet in the evening or using the creasing machine for short periods, a well-made lower-cost tip may perform perfectly well. The difference becomes more noticeable in a professional workshop where the tool may be used repeatedly for several hours, across different types and thicknesses of leather.During this type of work, temperature stability, heat recovery, tip geometry, surface polish and durability all become increasingly important. This is also where Regad's industrial heritage becomes relevant. Regad tools were developed for professional leather finishing and long-term workshop use rather than purely as hobby leathercraft accessories. So the advantage of a genuine Regad tip is not necessarily that it produces a dramatically better crease on the first piece of leather. The difference is often more noticeable on the 50th, 100th or 500th operation, when consistency becomes just as important as the quality of the first result.

Not automatically. A skilled leatherworker using a well-made alternative tip can produce an excellent result.Technique, temperature, pressure, speed, leather type and preparation all have an enormous influence on the finished crease. The advantage of Regad is therefore not that it magically makes every crease better. The advantage is repeatability. When working with different leathers, undertaking longer production runs or trying to maintain the same finishing standard throughout the working day, having a predictable tool becomes increasingly valuable.

A creasing iron is in direct contact with the leather, so the finish of the working surface matters. A properly polished surface allows the tool to glide smoothly while reducing the chance of unwanted drag, scratching or marking. This becomes particularly important with delicate calfskin, goatskin, fine vegetable-tanned leather and other leathers where surface damage can be difficult or impossible to correct.Regad's tools are machined and then carefully hand-polished as part of their manufacturing process.

This is probably the most important question. There isn't one correct choice for every leatherworker.Regad may be the right choice for you if:• You simply want the original professional tool• You prefer buying once and buying the best equipment you can justify• You are very particular about your tools and finishing quality• You work with premium or expensive leathers• You use your creasing machine regularly or for long periods• You work with many different leather types• You produce leather goods commercially• Repeatability and temperature consistency are important to you• You run a professional workshop where equipment reliability matters• You value tools manufactured and finished using traditional specialist processesAnd this doesn't only apply to professionals. Some hobbyists simply enjoy owning and using the best tools available. If leathercraft is something you are passionate about and you value the original Regad system, there is nothing wrong with choosing professional equipment even if you only make a few pieces each month.

That depends much more on what kind of craftsman you are than on whether you earn money from leatherwork. There are hobbyists who are extremely demanding about their tools and professionals who are perfectly happy using economical equipment.Ask yourself:Do I simply need a tool that can complete the task?or:Do I enjoy using the original, professionally made tool and want the greatest consistency I can reasonably achieve? If your priority is affordability and occasional use, a good-quality alternative can make perfect sense. If you are the person who normally buys the best version of a tool, values craftsmanship and intends to use it for many years, Regad is likely to appeal to you regardless of whether leathercraft is your profession or your hobby.

Think of the machine and tip as one system.A premium tip connected to a poorly regulated power supply cannot solve every temperature-control problem, just as an excellent power supply cannot compensate for a badly finished or incorrectly shaped tip.If you already own a compatible system and are happy with its temperature control, upgrading the tips you use most frequently can be a sensible first step. For heavier professional use, investing in a reliable machine, handle and genuine working tools as a complete system generally gives the most predictable experience.
