The Leatherworking Handbook: A Practical Illustrated Sourcebook of Techniques and Projects By Valerie Michael

A long-established reference for traditional hand leatherwork, The Leatherworking Handbook brings together the knowledge and practical experience of leatherworker, designer and teacher Valerie Michael.

Written as a hands-on guide for those wishing to make hand-stitched leather goods, the book introduces the materials, tools and techniques behind well-made leatherwork in a clear and highly visual format. It is equally useful for those beginning their leatherworking journey and for experienced makers looking for a dependable workshop reference.

Throughout the book, Valerie explains essential techniques including edge finishing, paring and skiving, hand stitching, pocket construction, attaching locks, studs and straps, surface decoration, pattern making and other traditional leatherworking processes.

These techniques are then brought together through a series of practical projects designed to develop skills progressively, including belts, wallets, quilted work and several styles of leather bag.

With clear photographs, diagrams and explanations throughout, the emphasis is not simply on following a project, but on understanding the methods that allow the reader to go on and develop their own leather goods.

First published in the early 1990s, The Leatherworking Handbook has remained a familiar reference within the leatherworking community for generations of makers.

Its longevity reflects something particularly valuable in craft: while tools and equipment continue to evolve, the fundamental skills of cutting, paring, stitching, construction and careful hand workmanship remain just as relevant today.

The book is therefore much more than a collection of projects. It is a record of practical knowledge developed through many years of professional making and teaching.

Our note on the 2026 reprint:

The 2026 reprint of The Leatherworking Handbook marks a small but meaningful milestone for Pro Atelier Plus: it is the first book we have chosen to stock.

We have always focused primarily on tools, materials and machinery for leathercraft, so introducing a book to our range was something we wanted to do selectively. The Leatherworking Handbook felt like a natural place to begin.

When the new printing became available, Valerie got in touch with Pro Atelier Plus and kindly let us know that she had taken the opportunity to revise and update the Suppliers section at the back of the book, including Pro Atelier Plus among the listed suppliers.

First published more than three decades ago, Valerie Michael’s book has remained in print and continues to introduce makers to the fundamental techniques behind traditional hand leatherwork. Its emphasis on practical skills, thoughtful construction and understanding the craft sits closely with the way we approach the tools and materials we supply.

That makes this particular edition especially meaningful to us, and we are delighted that it is the book that begins the Pro Atelier Plus bookshelf.
