MEISI Original is the first linen thread range developed by MEISI and remains a popular choice for makers who prefer the character, control and appearance of a traditional waxed linen hand-sewing thread.
Made from 100% natural flax linen, MEISI Original has a smooth, twisted and round construction with a waxed finish designed for comfortable hand stitching.
Unlike MEISI Super Fine, which is suitable for both hand sewing and selected machine-sewing applications, MEISI Original is intended primarily for hand sewing.
It is widely suited to leathercraft, saddle stitching, bookbinding and other traditional hand-sewn work, with six thread thicknesses available from a very fine 0.35 mm up to a substantial 0.90 mm.
Its round, 3-ply twisted construction helps the thread pass smoothly through pre-punched or pierced holes, while the waxed surface assists with handling during repeated hand stitching. The thread is designed to resist deformation and stretching and to minimise unwanted surface fuzzing during sewing. It is produced using environmentally conscious dyes designed to resist UV exposure and colour fading.
The MEISI spool features a practical click-lock design, allowing the loose end of the thread to be secured neatly after use. This helps prevent the thread from unwinding or becoming tangled during storage.

Six Thread Thicknesses
MEISI Original is available in six diameters:
- M30 – approximately 0.35 mm
- M40 – approximately 0.45 mm
- M50 – approximately 0.55 mm
- M60 – approximately 0.65 mm
- M70 – approximately 0.75 mm
- M90 – approximately 0.90 mm
The four regular thicknesses - M30, M40, M50 and M60 - are available across the main 73-colour MEISI Original range.
The heavier M70 and M90 threads are available in a more limited selection of basic colours and are particularly useful where a thicker, more visually prominent linen thread is required.
