Blog post: Inverse Pricking Irons vs. Regular Pricking Irons: Understanding the Difference

Ultra-fine, sharp and precise - designed for refined saddle stitching without the need for an awl in most fine leatherwork.

The Pro Atelier Plus Hollow Pricking Iron is a modern interpretation of the traditional French-style pricking iron, developed for leatherworkers who want a finer hole, easier penetration and a clean, consistent stitch line.

Unlike traditional French pricking irons, which are often used primarily to mark the leather before the holes are opened with an awl, our Hollow Pricking Irons feature extra-thin, finely sharpened teeth designed to pierce directly through leather. This allows you to prepare a stitch line that is ready for saddle stitching while maintaining the narrow, elegant slanted hole associated with French-style hand stitching.

The teeth are deliberately thinner and sharper than those found on many traditional French-style pricking irons. Their slim profile reduces the size of the opening in the leather, helping produce a cleaner and more refined stitch appearance, particularly when working with fine thread and lightweight leather.

The 43° cutting geometry creates a narrow angled slit and approximately 55° stitch slant, giving hand stitching its distinctive elegant French-style appearance.

Our Hollow Pricking Irons are available in exceptionally fine spacings, including sizes down to 1.0 mm.

These ultra-fine sizes are particularly suited to highly detailed leatherwork where conventional pricking-iron spacing can appear too large, including:

  • Hand-made watch straps
  • Fine wallets and card holders
  • Small leather accessories
  • Luxury leather goods
  • Miniature and highly detailed leatherwork

The fine spacing and narrow teeth allow makers to work with very fine thread and achieve a dense, precise stitch line while keeping the perforations discreet.

Pro Atelier Plus Hollow Pricking Irons are used by leatherworkers and professional watch-strap makers across the UK and Europe, including customers in France and Switzerland.

The distinctive hollow handle design reduces unnecessary weight while maintaining rigidity and balance. The result is a tool that feels controlled in the hand and is less tiring to use during repeated punching, while its long straight profile also helps with visual alignment along the stitch line.

Each Hollow Pricking Iron is made from premium Hitachi 440C stainless steel from Japan and hardened using vacuum heat treatment followed by liquid-nitrogen cryogenic processing.

With a hardness of 57–60 HRC, the steel offers an effective balance of hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and toughness, helping the finely sharpened teeth maintain their geometry through repeated professional use.

The teeth and body receive a silver-polished finish for smooth penetration, clean extraction from the leather and straightforward maintenance.
