This Blanchard Round Awl features a blade length designed for excellent control, making it well suited to precise, delicate work.

It is particularly useful for creating clean transitions around corners, marking leather accurately when working with cutting templates, and handling detail-focused tasks where accuracy matters.

When to use Round Awl

Backstitching:

When backstitching in hand-sewn leather, the needle passes through existing stitch holes where thread is already present. Piercing that thread can weaken the stitch, and enlarging the hole can compromise the overall finish. A round awl is especially effective in this situation. Unlike a wider diamond-shaped sewing awl, its fine, rounded point can locate the space around the existing stitch, allowing you to pass through without going through the thread. The smaller point also stretches the stitch hole less, helping maintain a clean and consistent stitch line.

Marking:

Round awls are commonly used for marking leather before cutting, stitching, or pattern placement. They leave small, discreet reference points that guide construction without damaging the surface. It is generally recommended to use separate round awls for backstitching and marking, as backstitching requires a consistently fine tip.

Edge paint application:

A round awl can also be used to apply edge paint, offering greater control over the amount of paint deposited along the leather edge. This is particularly helpful when working with thinner leathers or detailed pieces, as it reduces the risk of excess paint overflowing onto the leather surface.
